7 tips to work from home for beginners

7 tips to work from home for beginners

As we all know that Corono Virus or COVID 19 has been in Malaysia for quite sometime, but recently we’ve received many reported cases until our government had to make an announcement to lockdown Malaysia. Everyone is encourage to work from home. Like many of you out there, I am starting to deal with the new reality that working from home is not going to be just for a day or for a few days, but that this is going to be the new norm for awhile. After few days I feel that I manage to understand on how it feels to work from home. It will be very easy, if you follow these steps that im about to share.

Hope everyone has done what they needed to make the remote work experience from home into a productive one. Since I can, I wanted to let you know the top seven tips (sorry, I just couldn’t think of ten) I have to make working from home work well.

1. CREATE YOUR WORK SPACE

Create a separate space where you work away from where you relax. Taking your laptop out in front of the TV and working is not only a recipe for unproductivity, it also makes you feel like there is no place to get away. Like all our moms said when we were kids, “no homework in front of the TV!” Well at least it’s a good lesson my mom thought me when I was a kids. Hehehe

2 VIDEO CALL

Use the video capability of Skype or zoom or any other application out there to perform video call. I know, I know. You are at home. Well….time to go shower, get dressed, put something in the background of your work space that you are comfortable with colleagues seeing. These are good things for you to do anyway. Clean the area where the camera could see, well at least your colleagues thinks everything is under control.

3 BUILD AN ARTIFICIAL COMMUTE

The natural thing for many of us to do is to wake up and get our day started. The laptop is likely a few steps away from the bed and that’s your new commute. Stop. The commute seemed like an inconvenience when you had it, but it was a blessing in disguise. It separated your life a bit and created a buffer for your brain to distinguish between universes. In the morning, make your home commute include a number of stops before the laptop gets opened – coffee, exercise, news on TV, check in with the kids.

4. EAT MEAL LIKE YOU WOULD AT WORK

Yes, the kitchen is right there – and there are cookies! If you wouldn’t eat them in the cafeteria, don’t eat them at home. Otherwise you’ll get tired easily and get fat too.

5. TAKE BREAKS.

When you are in the office, everyone steps away from their desk to take a short walk, talk to their neighbor or just grab a cup of coffee. Do the same. Heck, use the time to Skype call a colleague and shoot the s**t in the toilet.

6. CALL YOUR LOVED ONES

If have had a sick kid at home and obviously his health is paramount to me. He’s fine, btw, and getting better each day. Our parents and grandparents. Call them. Check in on them. You think you are a creature of routine? I guarantee that they are affected by this change more than you are. A check in can change their mindset and perhaps lift their spirits too.

7. STAY IN TOUCH WITH COLLEAGUES

One of the downsides I have had with working from home is loneliness. Seems silly for an adult to say given we are constantly on calls, but sometimes you need to be interacting with people in a non-work situation. Find 2-3 times a day to insert planned skype calls to check in on colleagues and team members. Its good for you and them, I promise.

These are the 7 steps that I could think of and most important of all, stay at home during the lockdown as this will help to reduce the spreading of COVID 19. Work smart, sleep well, exercise and be good to others.
